This course emphasizes the core fundamentals of 2-D design as the building blocks of visual literacy and requires you to look at how artists throughout history have used 2-D elements to further the boundaries of artistic expression. Through lectures and hands-on assignments, gain a working knowledge of concepts and the vocabulary needed to facilitate your understanding of visual organization. Projects in a variety of media develop technical skills, sensitivity and perception in order to communicate effective artistic intent and vision. Through structured critiques, have the opportunity to evaluate and analyze your work while connecting it to contemporary art. The class also touches on conceptual art issues such as site, context, process, psychology and aesthetics of the object, as well as issues of subjective interpretation and audience interaction.

This independent study serves as the culminating experience for students in the Portfolio Development Certificate. During the Capstone course, you will create a coherent and cohesive body of work suitable for art school/graduate school applications and/or exhibition. You will also produce an artist's resume, artist statement and biography during this course. An advisor will guide you through your work and meet with you throughout the semester for critiques. At the conclusion of the Capstone course, you will exhibit your work publicly in the Continuing Studies Gallery located on the University's campus. Prerequisite: This class is for Portfolio Development Certificate enrollees only; successful completion of all prerequisite classes is mandatory.
