This course offers an overview of the tools and languages available to creative designers who seek to use the web as their medium of choice. Discussions, readings, explanations and a hands-on approach allow you to explore the web as a creative outlet for both designers and developers. Learn the roles of various web scripting languages such as HTML, CSS and JavaScript. In addition, explore the importance of social media, web-based content management systems, multiplatform design and current development best practices. This course culminates with the design of a simple website to be used as a reference for future work.

  • Designing Effective Web Pages

This course builds and expands on the principles and practices introduced in Foundations of Web Design + Development. You will cover the second half of the front-end designer workflow and apply learned and new principles of web design, specifically: project analysis; creation of high-fidelity, accessible and thoughtful user interfaces; and how to translate your interfaces into valid, semantically correct and well-formed HTML5 and CSS3 documents. Design topics include: requirements analysis, asset management, usability, goal-oriented design, accessibility, typography for web, color theory, coding standards, frameworks and scalability. during the sequenced design phases, you will use Adobe Photoshop and/or Illustrator exclusively to design and refine a series of web project mock-ups. Prerequisite: Foundations of Web Design + Development, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator or equivalent experience.

  • Web I - HTML + CSS

Learn the basic building blocks of HTML5 and CSS3 as you explore the creative possibilities for interactive design on the web. Build upon this foundation to turn your website designs into fully functional web pages. You will learn how HTML5 and CSS3 form the core of web development as well as how other languages can be used to enrich a basic site. This course takes you through the full life cycle of developing a web project from conception, design and development to launch. Prerequisite: Designing Effective Web Pages or equivalent experience.

  • Web II - Intermediate: JavaScript + jQuery

Expand upon your knowledge of HTML5 and CSS3 as you use JavaScript to create accessible and dynamic web content. In this class, expect to acquire advanced techniques and fluency for CSS and JavaScript/jQuery. Topics include interactive forms and collaborative web development through an introduction to server-side development. Prerequisite: Web I or equivalent experience.

  • Web III - Advanced: Responsive Design

Web III continues the use of forward-looking technologies such as HTML5 + CSS3 while adding to your knowledge of advanced JavaScript, client- side development and cross-browser testing and compatibility. Using media queries and multiple layouts, you will create a complex website that works on phones, tablets, laptops and desktops across platforms and browsers. Coursework combines design and development into a single cohesive workflow as you build a multipage website for a client, beginning with wireframes and technical specifications. You will create designs and mock-ups and go through a formal client review and revision process. Course topics rely heavily on lectures and critique as you work through your site. The result will be a complete marketing site for a client. Prerequisite: Web II or equivalent experience.

For those not proficient in Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, up to 6.0 additional credits may be required beyond the 15 total required credits.


Competency exams will determine students' level of proficiency with Adobe software programs; all students must be proficient in Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign to progress to the next course.

  • Adobe Creative Suite Overview

Designed for individuals with some exposure to the Adobe suite of design software, this course provides an overview of the fundamentals of Photoshop, Illustrator and InDesign. Topics include image resolution, scanning, importing and exporting images, print setup, photo adjustments and vector usage. Basic typography and design will also be addressed. You can expect to gain a better understanding of how the three programs work together to create products for print or the web.

Adobe’s page layout program lets you put together every kind of print-oriented product imaginable – brochures, ads, posters, billboards and more – using text, images and illustrations. InDesign allows the creation of multipage documents, and it works seamlessly with images from Photoshop, Illustrator and Acrobat. Learn how to integrate and use these tools more effectively.

Explore Photoshop through hands-on web design exercises. The course starts with an introduction to the Photoshop interface and tools and the types of files that are used for web graphics. Th e course continues as you learn how to use layers, effects, text, filters and image optimization tools for the web. Once you gain familiarity with the tools of Photoshop, you will be able to use those skills to create website templates, rich graphics and web page elements such as content boxes and buttons.
