In this class you will delve into glass as an experimental and artistic material. Emphasis will be on learning the basics in hot, warm, and cold glass manipulation through demonstration and experimentation. We will cover a wide range of traditional processes at the beginning of each class that you will then be able to explore individually with assistance from the instructor. Some traditional methods we will expand upon are hot sculpting, kiln working, torch working, illustration, and cold construction. Working with these techniques, you will create personal artistic interpretations in glass.

What will you learn in this course?

  • You will gain a fundamental understanding of glass as a natural, scientific, and artistic material
  • You will learn how to safely manipulate the material
  • You will be introduced to an experimental approach to art making that relies less on final product and more on experiential learning
  • You will leave the class with both technical samples and finished work
  • Through trial and error, we will leave the class collectively more informed about the properties and unique challenges of using glass as an art medium.
