Student Highlight

Patricia Shields - Capstone Exhibition, THE ROCK

Patricia Shields is a Philadelphia based photographer and UArts Digital Photography Certificate candidate whose work documents and preserves silent moments in time. Her recent photographs take iconic maximum high-security federal prison Alcatraz (San Francisco, CA) as subject.

Americans have long been transfixed by the brutality that took place inside the walls of Alcatraz, and fascinated with the notorious inhabitants imprisoned there. These images of the shuttered, famously inescapable penitentiary capture the ominous mood of isolation and confinement still present today. Light streams through windows—a sort of prisoner’s cinema—onto the crumbling paint of another era.

In the Spotlight

Sue White in Paperscapes

Featuring: Sun Young Kang, Dawn Kramlich, Elizabeth Mackie, and Susan White

The four artists of Paperscapes explore the possibilities of paper as a medium that straddles the divide between the analog past of print and our current digital age. Using a mixture of traditional and experimental techniques, these artists create immersive environments that challenge our traditional understanding of paper as simply a vehicle for the printed word. Incorporating light, shadow, sound, and texture, the works of Paperscapes respond to the architectural setting of the Art Alliance, transforming its turn-of-the-century domestic interior into an otherworldly space.

Susan White will be teaching Prints + Books: A Crash Course this Spring! To view the official press release for Paperscapes, go here

  • Integrating Media Literacy into Today's K-12 Classroom
Middle and high school students spend, on average, 8 hours a day engaged either actively or passively in media. This course will equip you to guide your students in recognizing marketing approaches, identifying propaganda, understanding stereotypes, critically evaluating media, distilling and interpreting messages, and using media in innovative ways for learning.

  • Digital Citizenship/Digital Literacy in Today's K-12 Classroom
Students have the power of the Internet at their fingertips. What types of issues should you, as a teacher, be aware of and be able to navigate within a seamless, ever-connected environment at school and at home?  You will emerge from this course understanding the import of guidance and leadership in the digital world, including appropriate and safe use of digital tools and the empowerment of students through digital tools.
